Patio Covers and Pergolas

Patio Covers vs. Pergolas

Summer is here and it seems like even though the world is still turned upside down, most of us have figured out a way to cope with the current struggles. What better way than spending a little extra money in making your outdoor space a wonderful and SHADED area for BBQs, small gatherings and quite days to relax. Yes, during those hot summer days, shade is one of the most pleasing extras that you can build around your house and patio area.

If you already started looking into your backyard shading you might have encountered two main options - pergolas and patio cover. What exactly is the difference though? Let’s look at what distinguishes one from another to establish exactly what the most suiting solution will be for you.

There are 3 main patio cover types:

Roof extension that create a seamless addition of a patio cover using the same roof material as your house.

A stand alone patio cover can be set anywhere in your outdoor space and made out of wood or metal material or a combination of both.

The easiest and probably most cost sufficient solution is a patio cover that is a simple extension to your house and easily attached to your house wall. Those kind of patio covers come in kits and are easy to assemble. The look of those kits are a bit harder to integrate in your overall look of the house though because their main purpose is a practical one. The roof structure is usually a solid one to protect you from harmful sun exposure.

Let’s talk about pergolas. Pergolas bring all of the main benefits of a patio cover but they add two additional components: ambience and style. They are very esthetic to look at and give your outdoor space an even nicer WOW effect and you can bring your personal style preferences into the mix. The basic pergola has a wooden base with wood slats across the top. You can decide on the spacing to give each slat less or more room from one another. This will already give you some shade but if you are looking for higher UV resistance you can add a canopy material to the base stand or some unique looking metal sheets with designs.

So when deciding on what works best for your patio space, take in consideration material, pricing and also if you are looking for a more practical or esthetic approach.
