HOW TO INCORPORATE COLOR IN YOUR WINTER GARDENS

It is possible to have a colorful garden all year long: even in the winter.  Our Mediterranean climate here in San Diego allows us to grow some really stunning winter specimens.

The main star of the show: Aloes! When a majority of your flowering perennials go dormant in the winter, the beloved Aloes steal the show.

You do not have to rely on flowers to bring color to your yard. There are so many options of plants with year-round foliage that range from various shades of greens, to purples, reds, and oranges.

Coprosmas for example: a hardy shrub that comes in an array of colors: ranging from deep reds, to light pinks and vibrant yellows. These evergreen shrubs provide year-round color, and their waxy leaves are an easy way to incorporate unique textures in your garden.

Cordyline’s are another one of our favorites: from burgundy to hot pink. A funky plant that shines all year long.

Sometimes it’s not the flowers or even the leaves that make a plant stand out: lets not overlook the beauty of fruit! Let those glistening winter berries do all the seasonal decorating. Vibrant colors for you to admire and yummy food for the native birds: a win win if you ask us! Firethorns (Pyracantha) & Brush Cherry (Syzgium) are two stand-out specimens.

Succulents are another fool proof way to add year -round color. Succulents are hardy, low maintenance, and require little to no supplemental winter water. Sedums, Tradescantias, Echeverias, Agaves: you can literally paint the rainbow in your yard using succulents as your medium. Whether a focal statement or a filler plant: there is a succulent out there that can fill your needs.
