What types of sod to choose for your lawn
Thinking about re-sodding your lawn, but overwhelmed with all the lawn variates available? Not all lawns are created equal, so make sure you are asking the right questions before you start shopping for the best sod for your yard:
Will your lawn receive a lot of foot traffic?
Do you have pets?
Does your lawn receive full sun, full shade, or part sun?
How often do you want to mow your lawn?
How often will you plan to irrigate your lawn?
Below are a few of our favorite sod varieties that we’ve installed throughout San Diego.
A coarse, broad blade warm season sod great for families with children and pets due to its relatively fast regrowth and rebound abilities. St. Augustine sod is considered a sports turf, with excellent drought tolerance. It thrives in warm climates, tolerates the shade, and adapts well to salty soils.
Looking to save water? We recommend CA Native Bent Grass. A medium size blade, with deep dark green color, this cool season bent grass is known for its exceptional drought tolerance. Tolerant to both sun and shade, this versatile grass is great for any lawn. It has great wear recovery and is more resistant to weeds than some other lawn options. Another huge selling point is you don’t need to mow this grass, you can let it grow out and creating a beautiful, informal meadow
Tall fescue is a slower growing grass with a dense growth habit. This thrives in full sun, and can tolerate some shade. A good choice for sunny lawns. Once established this grass has great wear tolerance and resistance to weeds.
UC Verde buffalo grass is a warm season grass. You can mow it, or leave it long for a natural meadow look that will flower and go to seed attracting birds and butterflies. Buffalograss is drought tolerant and thrives in the sun. It is a slower growing grass, and thus is not ideal for high traffic areas at is takes some time to repair itself.
This Delta Grassland Mix is another drought tolerant native grass with a beautiful meadow like look to it if left growing. It has a narrow fine leaved texture which makes it soft and easy to walk on. As this kind is a slow growing grass, the maintenance is definitely on the lower spectrum. It persists under drought conditions and moderate wear. SInce this sod likes to grow tuft forming it is ideal for erosion control and as a slope ground cover.
